WHAT’S HAPPENING
From ICU to Instagram: The Story of Nurse Influencer Miki Rai

While many healthcare workers use social media casually, few have built the kind of platform that Miki Rai (@mikirai) has established. Starting her content journey during the pandemic while working in the ICU, Miki has become one of nursing's most recognized online voices.
"I started making videos because I wanted to humanize nurses during a time when we were being called heroes but treated like we were disposable," Miki explained in a 2023 interview with Health Magazine. "I never expected it to become a second career."
Here's how her platform has grown according to public data:
1.2 million followers on TikTok, with her most viral video (about nurse-to-patient ratios) reaching 9.7 million views
450,000 followers on Instagram, where her engagement rate averages 5.8% (significantly higher than the platform's 2% average)
$7,500-$15,000 per sponsored post, according to influencer marketing platform HypeAuditor
While maintaining her clinical skills by working one shift per week in her original ICU, Miki has expanded into educational content and advocacy. In a 2024 Nurse.org feature, she noted: "I'm still a nurse first. The day I can't back up my content with current clinical knowledge is the day I need to stop creating it."
Her impact goes beyond entertainment. When Congress was debating the Nurse Staffing Standards for Hospital Patient Safety and Quality Care Act last year, Miki's explainer video was viewed over 3 million times and led to more than 50,000 emails to representatives through her action link.
"Social media gives nurses a voice in a way we've never had before," she told the American Journal of Nursing in their digital influencer issue. "For generations, we were told to stay quiet and just do our jobs. Now we can advocate for ourselves and our patients on a massive scale."
Maybe it’s time more of us start making content around our careers!

The Rural Healthcare Dilemma
Travel Nurses: The Lifeline for America's Forgotten Hospitals
While travel nurses often conjure images of sunny California assignments or bustling NYC hospitals, a growing number are becoming the backbone of America's rural healthcare system. In communities where recruiting permanent staff has become nearly impossible, travel nurses are filling critical gaps.
Rural hospitals face a perfect storm of challenges:
Aging workforce: 20% of rural nurses are expected to retire within five years, according to the National Rural Health Association
Limited resources: Rural facilities operate on margins 37% smaller than urban counterparts
Geographic isolation: 63% of rural hospitals struggle to attract nurses, citing location as the primary barrier.
As younger nurses continue to move away from smaller communities for better pay and career opportunities more hospitals and facilities rely on travel nurses to fill their gaps.
The Rural Premium
Agencies have responded to these challenges by creating rural-specific incentives:
Rural differential pay: Additional $7-15/hour for assignments in communities under 15,000 population
Retention bonuses: Up to $8,000 for completing full 13-week contracts without cancellations
Housing solutions: Pre-arranged accommodations to eliminate the challenge of finding short-term housing in areas with limited rental markets
Rural specialist program: Agency-sponsored training for the unique challenges of rural practice
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"Nurses are the heart of healthcare. When that heart is strong, the whole system benefits from the lifeblood of compassion, expertise, and dedication that nurses pump through its veins." - Dr. Scharmaine Lawson, NP
